Quilt Preparations

The following is to help you so that your quilts come out there best.

  • Press your quilt top and backing making sure those seems are nice and flat.
  • Cut all loose threads from the front and back, this is especially important on light fabrics as a loose thread could show through.
  • Backing should be a minimum of 8 inches wider and 8 inches longer than you quilt top. This is crucial and therefore any quilt backs that are shorter than 6 inches will have a fee assessed for adding fabric for quilting purposes.
  • If your quilt is directional please place a pin in the upper right corner signifying that this is the top.
Borders !

The following is some helpful tips to insure flat borders.
First measure your quilt measure in 3 places top, middle and bottom, if they are different take an average. Then mark your borders to those 3 places. As you sew on your borders make sure to ease in any fullness that you might have.
Another trick that I do is I starch my borders before sewing them on, it seems to help stabilize the fabric.
I can not stress enough that if you have "wavy" borders these can not always be " quilted out" and therefore may result in pleats in your borders that we can not be responsible for.
If in doubt about the fullness of borders lay entire quilt on the floor and square it up, if you see waves in the border then you have fullness.
